Benjamin Ferencz, a leading American prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals. Born in the mountains of Transylvania, he came to America as a baby, lived in Hell's Kitchen, studied at Harvard Law School and served under general Patton in Europe in WWII. He was present at the American war crimes trials in Dachau and the chief prosecutor in the Einsatzgruppen trials in Nuremberg. He has devoted his long life to the establishment of an International Criminal Court and to the fight against the crime of aggression.Antonio Cassese is Professor of International law at the University of Florence. He was the first President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, established in 1993. As president or member of many important international committees Cassese contributed to the development of international humanitarian law and international criminal law. He was President of the Council of Europe Committee for the Prevention of Torture, Chairman of the UN Commission of Inquiry into violations of Human Rights and Humanitarian law in Darfur (2004-2005) He currently President of the Special Court for Lebanon. The immediate incentive for the interviews was the Praemium Erasmianum, a prestigious international prize, awarded The Netherlands in November 2009 to Antonio Cassese and Benjamin Ferencz. To further paint the portrait of these two inspiring and tenacious advocates of peace and international law, several articles of both are reprinted in this book.
